2019 Douglass Debs Dinner

Detroit DSA invites you to join us for our annual dinner and fundraiser. We'll be reflecting on all the great work we did this year, and what's in store for the year to come.

There will be music and a catered dinner. The event will be chaired by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), a proud member of our Chapter, who will give the keynote speech. We will also hear from the great Abdul El-Sayed.

The money we raise at this event supports all of our activities for coming year.

This year we are thrilled to be honoring:

Tameka Ramsey co-founding director of Pontiac Policy Council, who tireless community work has been a true inspiration to us. Tameka is a fighter for social justice. Our Public Education Working Group partnered with P2C in the past to screen Backpacks Full of Cash, and they helped Detroit DSA host a Brake Light Clinic in Pontiac.

Nia Winston, president of UNITE HERE Local 24, who went on strike with Marriott last fall. Detroit DSA members were honored to join the picket line in front of the Westin, and galvanized by the energy of Local 24. Nia was an amazing leader, ensuring that workers gained a fair contract from the Westin Book Cadillac.

David Green, former chair of Detroit DSA (1996–2018) and current member of the Steering Committee. David's years of service to our chapter have made it possible for us to be where we are today. He was an instrumental part of the "Run, Bernie, Run" campaign in 2015 that convinced Bernie Sanders to make a run for President. He poured countless hours into keeping socialism alive in Michigan, and we look forward to recognizing him for his work.

We will also be honoring the memory of Rick Haberman founder and first chair of Detroit DSA Medicare for All Working Group. Rick — pictured above, center — was a true comrade to us in Detroit DSA. He died unexpectedly in 2018. We are proud to honor his memory.
